Nigella sativa originates in southwest Asia and parts of North Africa. Its seeds, known across cultures as black seed or Roman coriander, are cold pressed by Balcho after careful selection.
Use of the seeds and their oil dates back to Ancient Egypt, which is also where one of the product's folk names, pharaoh's oil, comes from.
Taste and characteristics
The oil is dark in colour, with a rich, slightly pungent aroma. It carries fatty acids, calcium, folic acid, niacin, zinc, thiamine, iron and carotene.
